Enclosure recommendations

Adult Tegus require a well-sealed enclosure measuring at least 8x4x4ft, with clustered and thermostatically controlled overhead heating and high-range T5 UV lighting. Temperatures and humidity should be measured using a digital thermo-hygrometer.

Babies can be housed in a 4x2x2ft vivarium to start with, whereas juveniles can go in to a 6x2x2ft or their adult-sized enclosure straight away depending on how established and confident they are individually.

They appreciate a deep soil-based substrate layer with lots of hides and enrichment to enable them to display their naturalistic behaviours, such as their love for digging. They have higher humidity requirements that should be maintained with a moisture retaining substrate, misting and a large water bowl. The correct supplement schedule is essential.
