The Western Hognose snake is a small, popular pet snake species named after their cute upturned noses which they use to bury themselves and create tunnel networks in the wild!

  • Adult size range: 24” - 36” (females larger than males)

  • Handling: Friendly once used to their new owner

  • Suitability: Well-researched Beginner

  • Western Hognose snakes are mildly rear-fanged venomous as a hunting adaptation. If a person is bitten, this can act similarly to a bee sting, with some people being more prone to a reaction (swelling and itching) than others. That being said, this species do not tend to bite unless provoked and feeling threatened, and are more likely to give a warning heat butt.

Kit requirements

  • Adults require 2-3ft long enclosures (depending on the individual’s size)

  • Babies should be housed in smaller enclosures such as a hatchling snake kit until this is outgrown

  • Guarded overhead heating or a heat mat connected to a thermostat

  • Digital thermometer or heat gun

  • 2.5 - 7% T5 UV lighting is highly recommended

  • Multiple hides and a substrate that allows for burrowing

  • Complete enclosure kits available!
